Hand caning is the process of weaving cane strands by hand to create the seat webbing mesh for a chair. This type of caning takes years of practice to master. Hand cane consists of steps that result in the webbing mesh. Hand cane is evident when drilled holes are present on the seat frame.

Material sizes for cane strands are medium, narrow medium, fine, fine fine, super fine, and common. Binder cane comes in 4mm,5mm,6mm, 7mm and 8mm sizes.

Pressed (machine) cane is the term for pre-woven sheets of cane webbing. This type of caning tends to be cheaper while providing same look and durability as the hand cane version.
